All dogs within the city limits are required to be licensed annually. The license fee is $5.00. Licenses are available for purchase at City Hall. The licensing period runs from May to May each year. Failure to license your dog will result in a fine. Licensing of your dog not only is required by ordinance but also aids the Police Department in returning your pet to you should it go astray.

The City of Aitkin Pound houses dogs only. No cats or other animals will be impounded.

If your dog is running at large the City charges a pick up fee of $30.00 regardless whether your dog was placed into the pound or not.

If your dog is impounded the City imposes an additional $20.00 per day fee for impound of your pet. Impound fees can be paid at City Hall.

The City of Aitkin Pound is a service for the citizens of the City of Aitkin and will not accept dogs from outside the city limits.

If your dog is missing you are advised to contact the Aitkin County Sheriff's Office at 218-927-7400. Sheriff's dispatchers maintain a list of lost and recovered animals. While your dog might not be at the city pound someone might have picked up your dog and are holding it until the owner is located.

The City of Aitkin Pound does accept donations. Donations should be brought to City Hall as there is not full-time staff at the pound.

The City does place some dogs up for adoption. If you are interested in adopting a dog you are encouraged to contact the Police Department. When a dog is available for adoption an advertisement will be placed in the Aitkin Independent Age. Dogs are typically adopted on a first come first serve basis.

*This is not a shelter we do not accept animals outside of the reasons above.
